COMPOSTING TOILET
Composting toilets are low-tech solutions which have been used around the world for many years. They tend to require more maintenance than other solutions, and can have problems with odors and flies, though these can be mitigated to a degree by using sawdust after each use and using screens on any opening.
Dual vault system with urine diverter allows for continuous use throughout year.
Single toilet system uses DYI construction, but requires import of main components.
Advantages:
- Dry, natural decomposition method
- Most cost-effective solution
- Produces fertilizer which can be used on plants.
- Does not require excavation of pit, so useful in rocky environments.
Disadvantages:
- Requires more frequent maintenance than other solutions.
- Main components of individual toilet not available in Guatemala.
- May require multiple individual units for larger families.
- The large dual-pit design may not be acceptable to families.
- Requires a relatively long drain field.
