Potential Solution 1:

IN-GROUND BIODIGESTER

In areas where a pit can be excavated, an in ground biodigester, could provide a sanitary solution to the processing of human waste.

Advantages:

  • Utilizes methanogen bacteria, similar to those in cow stomachs, breaking down organic waste.
  • Fully self-contained system, available in Guatemala.
  • Protected in excavation pit, so less likely to be damaged.
  • Scalable 600 L. or 1300 L. system, dependent on family size.
  • Hand-made biodigesters using second-hand IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container)  tanks also an option.
  • Alternative to regular compost toilets (no human contact, minimal maintenance, easy, efficient, odorless)

Disadvantages:

  • Not viable in rocky terrain, when digging a hole is not feasible.
  • Somewhat more expensive than other options.
  • Requires a relatively long drain field.
